Why dry eye develops and when to take it seriously

Sight is not an ability captured by a single measurement. Alongside the prescription, the tear film, the pressure inside the eye, the state of the retina and how the two eyes work together all shape the result. For that reason we assess every visit across the whole visual system rather than through one complaint.

How the assessment works

The first stage measures visual acuity, examines the front of the eye with a slit lamp and takes the intraocular pressure. Where needed the pupil is dilated so the retina and optic nerve can be reviewed.

After the examination we talk through the options, how long each takes and the expected result. A patient occupation, screen time and daily routine are an important part of the plan.

What to pay attention to

• Not postponing an interim review if the prescription starts changing quickly.
• Keeping to the cleaning and replacement schedule when wearing contact lenses.
• Using lenses with an ultraviolet filter in bright sunlight.
• Seeking help without delay for sudden loss of vision, flashes of light or a curtain across the field.

What happens afterwards

Once the assessment is complete we recommend regular reviews so the result is maintained. The interval depends on what was found and on the general state of your eye health.
